What is RSS?

In a world where information comes at you from every direction, wouldn't it be pleasant to sort through the clutter and stay up-to-date with the news stories you are interested in? Well, now you can, thanks to RSS.

RSS is a format for syndicating news. In fact, it's generally referred to as 'Really Simple Syndication.' Not all websites offer RSS, but its popularity is growing as organizations such as CNN, Wired, and the New York Times use RSS to provide readers with the latest news.

How do I start using RSS feeds?

The first thing you need is something called a news reader. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. All allow you to subscribe to and display the RSS feeds you want.

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is decide what content you want. For example, to receive the latest SigEp news and stories, begin by clicking on the orange RSS button on the homepage, or in the News-Top Stories section. Then, simply drag the URL (http://www.sigep.org/rss.asp) into your news reader or cut and paste the URL into a new feed in your news reader. That's it -- the news reader will do the rest!

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera, and Safari, have functionality which automatically picks up RSS feeds for you. For more details on these, please check their websites.
