General Information

SigEp provides several types of insurance. The first and most common is general liability insurance. This program is in place to respond to claims or suits that might arise against the Fraternity. The billing rates for 2007 will be approximately: $550 base for each chapter and a $129 per man charge. These rates are subject to change upon determination of renewal rates set in November. SEC’s (Sigma Epsilon chapters) for their first two years receive a half-rate discount on these fees.

The general liability insurance policy covers undergraduate chapters, their members and officers, and Alumni and Volunteer Corporations, their members, officers, and volunteers, while acting within the scope of their duties for the Fraternity. Liability insurance coverage is MANDATORY for all chapters.

Examples of common liability claims:

  • Alcohol related
  • Assault and battery
  • Auto accidents
  • Hazing
  • Sexual assault
  • Slip and fall injuries on chapter property

Exclusions not covered under the liability insurance policy:

  • Alcohol and drug – Coverage does not apply to any member who purchases alcohol with chapter funds; sells alcohol; or possesses, sells, or uses illegal drugs.
  • Assault and battery
  • Sexual abuse or assault
  • Hazing

Other items not covered under the liability insurance program:

  • Breach of contracts claims
  • Illegal acts
  • Medical payment coverage – Medical payment coverage is typically found on homeowners policies, and it provides coverage to anyone injured on the insured’s property. It is available to injured parties regardless of whether or not there is any liability on the insured’s part.
  • A chapter employee hurt on the job. Workers’ Compensation coverage must be purchased locally by each chapter having employees.
