Risk Management Reminders

Severity of Liability Losses Frequency of Liability LossesAssault and battery remains a prevalent claim.
After completing our annual loss assessment, we have learned that assault and battery (fighting) is once again the top claim for both frequency and severity within our organization. This means assault and battery occurs more often than any other type of claim and more money is paid out for this type of claim. Loss history is an important resource for the Fraternity so we can better understand the most problematic behaviors. Claims cause your insurance premiums to significantly increase. Members must not fight when faced with a controversial situation. It is always best to
keep a level head and call the police if necessary.

Sign your chapter’s Commitment to Promote
Chapter and Individual Responsibility.

Case StudyLast month at CLA, chapter officers were asked to sign the Commitment to Promote Chapter and Individual Responsibility, a revision of the non-hazing membership education certificate from years past. By signing this form, chapters commit to living the values of Sigma Phi Epsilon by showing respect and care for self and others. Chapters that did not complete the form at CLA should sign the electronic copy and email it to Morgan Maclin.

Understand the contracts you sign. Whether you are signing a university recognition agreement, a lease agreement or a contract with a hotel or third party vendor, make sure you read all the fine print and understand the language. We have seen a lot of problematic, unfair indemnification language in these agreements and contracts. If an incident happens, it is too late to make changes or dispute it if you have signed the contract already.

Please make sure you review these documents with a volunteer with a legal background or Director of Risk Management Kathy Johnston before you sign them.

Get the alcohol education rebate. It’s not too late to save five percent on your chapter’s 2012 liability insurance bill by participating in a risk management/alcohol education workshop. The chapter can receive valuable information and save money, too. Take attendance (90 percent chapter participation is required), provide a summary of the program and send it to Risk Management Director Kathy Johnston.
