Help your Balanced Man Program reach its full potential
Davis Orr, Alabama ‘14
Recent Vice President of Member Development Davis Orr, Alabama ‘14, will become chapter president in 2013. Davis is a double major in marketing and business management from Birmingham, Ala. As Davis prepares to lead the Alabama SEC, he reflected on the steps he took one year ago to effectively transition to the member development role. The upcoming winter break is an opportune time for officers to prepare for transitions and refine their chapter’s member development program.
- I met with the outgoing vice president of member development to discuss the development plan and decide how best to improve on it.
- My regional director helped me fully understand the ideals of the Balanced Man Program and why it is important.
- After evaluating our member development committee structure, I re-aligned brothers into positions best suited for them.
- We formed a committee to gauge the chapter’s thoughts on the development plan and how to improve programming and events.
- I met with our Balanced Man Steward and other AVC members to establish an important relationship and discuss plans for the next year so that I had support from my AVC mentor.
- Throughout my time as vice president of member development, I stayed in contact with our regional director and headquarters staff to ask for feedback and solicit support of the chapter’s efforts.
- We presented the plan improvements and changes to the chapter to ensure buy-in and transparency.
- We then met with key brothers to gauge their thoughts and feedback on the changes and improvements.
My best advice: as an officer, you are still a brother. You are the leader that they elected, and it is your responsibility to do so the best way you can. Never take personal offense to complaints or negative reactions to your programming and decisions you know that your intent is to do what is best for the chapter and for the brothers.
