Former Chapter President, Bryan Baranyay, Stevens Tech ’14, shares how the New Jersey Alpha RLC makes the most out of the Carlson Leadership Academy (CLA). Follow these tips to prepare your chapter for CLA.
Start with your officer transitions. To prepare for CLA as well as the rest of their terms, each executive board member meets with his predecessor. Each vice president is given all the information he needs to transition into his term. Most importantly, outgoing officers share the challenges associated with their position so that the new officer can go into CLA looking for solutions.
Bring a large delegation. We’ve sent at least 14 brothers to CLA for the past two years. Each member of the executive board finds a brother to attend their respective tracks with him to cultivate brothers for future executive board positions. We also send as many brothers as possible to the recruitment track. This has shown a tremendous return during recruitment as many of the lessons acquired are implemented in our recruitment plan.
Make your delegation diverse. As soon as the semester begins, we advertise the program and promote it to all brothers, especially new members. By immersing our newest brothers in the ideals and leadership that is taught at CLA, they will become even greater leaders in our chapter and community.
Make it a chapter event. New Jersey Alpha has several traditions for CLA. From traveling together on the Metro North train to having breakfast as a group the day after CLA, we cherish the idea of being together and enjoying the experience as a chapter. On Sunday morning before heading back to campus, we book a private room at the hotel to enjoy breakfast together and reflect on what we learned during the program. We discuss takeaways, ideas, and the importance of the networking that each brother has done over the past few days. This breakfast discussion is a great way to conclude CLA as it aligns everyone in attendance and prepares them to bring the lessons learned back to our chapter.
