SigEp recruits 4,000 new members

OVER 4,000 NEW MEMBERS JOINED SIGEP THIS FALL SEMESTER

Check out the top 20 SigEp chapters in total recruitment from this fall, and a list of the schools that increased by the most compared to last fall's total. By and large, these chapters have been successful by following a plan, working diligently and focusing on recruiting the right type of men, who live up to their standards.

A recruitment event at Oregon StateThis fall, 4,002 new members joined one of our 240 chapters nationwide. This represents the highest total for one fall semester since 1994. National recruitment eclipsed last fall by 150 men, when our total manpower was higher than it had been in almost two decades.

We caught up with vice presidents of recruitment from three of these schools to find out what their secret to success was.

Drew Hines, Nebraska '13
We were successful in recruitment this year due largely to referrals from other members of the chapter, as is usually the case.

If we did something differently from past years, or from other fraternities, it was to stress academics more. We used the Balanced Man ideal when recruiting, and made sure to spend a particularly significant amount of time on academics, and the true reason why one goes to college. We felt this helped us to engage those more serious about their futures, while pushing away those simply looking for a good time.

John Petroff, Boston C '13
The success of our fall recruitment actually began in the previous spring, when some brothers took it upon themselves to begin planning a highly-organized recruitment process. Going into the fall with a clear set of goals and a schedule, we felt confident we would succeed. We placed more of an emphasis on chapter-wide recruiting this time around, and I believe that slight adjustment accounts for the difference between this recruitment period and previous performances. With nearly half of the chapter set to graduate this spring, every brother knew the impact this group of new members would have on the long term success of our chapter, so everybody stepped up.

Dan Cushing, Oregon State '13
As a chapter, we are committed to not consume alcohol with recruits or provide alcohol as a recruiting tool. We believe that by making this choice, we decrease liability, lower costs, and present an image of professionalism that embodies the SigEp way – and defies the "frat boy" stereotype.

Our vice president of recruitment and BMS chairman receive up to one year of free room and board for the following school year. Having this compensation allows us to focus on recruitment without being distracted by summer jobs.

The summer is short and the more people you can meet, the better. This summer we met about 350 recruits and of those, 45 ended up joining.
