SigEps suit up for varsity sports

BROTHERS PLAY KEY ROLE FOR MANY FALL SPORTS TEAMS

Here is our yearly review of stellar accomplishments by SigEp undergraduate varsity athletes from the Fall 2010 semester. Also mentioned are several alumni involved in college and professional fall sports. Chapters and alumni can submit names of athletes to communications@sigep.net for future coverage in both the Sound Bite and The Journal.


BABSON
Cross country runner Michael Liachowitz, ’14, ran in three meets. His best 8K time was 28:14 at the UM-Dartmouth meet.

BAKER
Among the school’s top cross country competitors was Corey Clark, ’13, whose top 8K time was 26:34.67 at the ESU Plant Sub Invitational. Other best times were 26:59.67 while placing 31st at the NAIA Mid-States Classic and 27:03.38 in a 12th place finish at the Heart of America Conference 8K event.

CASE WESTERN RESERVE
Cross country runner David Dixon, ’14, had a best finish of 23rd at the 6K Sudek Classic and a best 8K time of 27:20.50 at the All-Ohio Open.

Matt Konecnik, Clarkson '12CLARKSON
Earning All-Liberty League honorable mention in soccer was tri-captain/defenseman Matt Konecnik, ’12, who started 15 of 16 games.

DENISON
Starting every game for the 10-8-1 soccer team was defenseman Matt Kepler, ’12.

DRAKE
Three SigEps saw action for the 7-4 football squad. Offensive linemen Avery Fuhs, ’12, and Andrew Keller, ’11, appeared in six games while defensive lineman Zach Lozier, ’12, played in two contests.

EASTERN ILLINOIS
Seeing action for the football team were wide receiver Charles Graves, ’11, who caught nine passes for 105 yards, and linebacker Antonio Taylor, ’13, who made 14 tackles.

EMORY
Scott Jarvis, ’13, competed at the University Athletic Association cross country meet and clocked a best 8K time of 27:16.47 in a 10th place finish at the Berry College Invitational. He also had a time of 28:29.8 at the Royal Cross Country Challenge and placed 24th at the Sewanee Invitational.

FRESNO STATE
Running back Ryan Mathews, ’11, had a good rookie season with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, despite missing some playing time with injuries. Over 12 games, he rushed for 678 yards and seven touchdowns on 158 carries and caught 22 passes for 145 yards. Members of the school’s Humanitarian Bowl squad were fullback Dylan Cruz, ‘13, and wide receiver Mathew De Los Santos, ’12.

HUNTINGDON
Co-captain Jeff Jenkins, ’12, placed second at the Great South Athletic Conference Cross Country 8K (28:52.8), finished 17th at the Coach “O” Invitational and clocked a time of 28:14 at the NCAA South Regional meet. Teammate Ian Layne, ’13, had an 11th place finish at the GSAC meet, was 26th at the Coach “O” meet and also ran in the NCAA South Regional. Seeing action for the soccer team were Jacob Bailey, ’12, (13 starts), Joseph Jean, ’12, (seven starts) and Hunter Howell, ’14, (12 games).

JOHN CARROLL
Quarterback Jack Murphy, ’14, was a member of the football squad.

KENTUCKY WESLEYAN
A leading runner on the cross country squad was Nick Richey, ’14, who ran a time of 29:49 at the Great Lakes Valley Conference meet and also competed in the 10K NCAA Division II regional meet. Also on the cross country squad were Franklin Moore, ’11 and Connor Moore, ’14. Midfielder Sam Waninger, ’12, had 17 starts and scored three points for the soccer squad.

LAWRENCE TECH
Goalie Phil Lucas, ’12, was a member of the soccer team.

Tim Schmalz, Michigan Tech '11MIT
Benjamin Mattocks, ’12, was a member of the cross country squad.

MICHIGAN TECH
Fullback Tim Schmalz, ’11, was a regular for the 8-2 football squad and scored two touchdowns. A 3.87 student in computer and electrical engineering, he was named to the ESPN College Division Academic All-District IV first team.

MISSOURI S&T
Five SigEps were members of the football team, led by defensive back Cameron Williams, ’12, who made 29 tackles and recovered two fumbles. Linebacker Ashley Jordan, ’11, started three games and had 12 tackles, while linebackers Nate Stodghill, ’12, and Ryan Morse, ’13, saw action. Defensive back Jake Schneider, ’14, was also on the squad.

MONMOUTH
Three SigEp players saw action for the soccer team. Key players were Ryan Stransky, ’13, Lucas Knox, ’10, and Eddie Martinez, ’12.

MORAVIAN
Co-captain/offensive guard Daniel Cancelliere, ’11, of the 7-4 football squad was named to the North-American Interfraternity Conference All-Fraternity All-American first team for NCAA Divisions II and III. He also was on the All-Centennial Conference first team and the D3football.com All-South Region second team. Also seeing action were defensive back Michael Burke, ’11, who had 10 tackles, and tight end Mike Zanoni, ’12.

Cameron Williams, Missouri S&T '12MOREHEAD STATE
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Jon Rauch, Morehead State, ’00, had another good season out of the bullpen. Over 59 games, he posted a 3-1 record with 21 saves and a 3.12 earned run average.

OHIO WESLEYAN
Football player Jimmy Willison, ’11, was a starter at center for the fourth year. Joining him on the offensive line were tackle Dave Stewart, ’12, guard Chad Williams, ’12, and Kollin Tossey, ’12.

OKLAHOMA
Defensive back Dillon Schooley ’14 was a member of the 12-2 Fiesta Bowl champions.

STEVENS TECH
Andrew Verderame, ’12, was a solid cross country runner, posting a best 8K time of 28:18 in a 36th place finish at the Highlander Invitational and placing 23rd (29:55.25) at the Delaware Invitational.

THIEL
Defensive back Cody Sirgey, ’11, started seven contests for the football squad and posted 24 stops. Teammate Jon Negron saw action at linebacker.

TRINE
SigEp football players dominated the 11-1, squad which played in the NCAA Division III championship game. Quarterback Eric Watt, ’11, won the Gagliardi Trophy as the top player in Division III and won All-American recognition. He led D-III in passing efficiency (182.05 points), completing 197 of 294 attempts (67.01 percent) for 2,873 yards and 33 touchdowns. His top games were 20 of 30 for 339 yards, three scores versus DePauw and 21 of 26 for 326 yards and four TDs against Kalamazoo. Also a good runner, Watt ran for 305 yards and five TDs on 66 attempts while earning Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Offensive Most Valuable Player honors. Tight end Thomas Wyman, ’11, was on the NIC All-Fraternity All-American first team, the D3football.com All-Region third team and the All-MIAA first team after catching 33 passes for 330 yards and nine TDs. Other good offensive players were Jeff Langley, ’11 (20 receptions for 317 yards), Westly Verner, ’12 (19 catches for 262 yards) and Devin Leas, ’13 (156 rushing yards, three TDs).

Trine kicker Jeremy Howard, ’11, was named to the NIC All-Fraternity All-American first team for Divisions II and III. The recipient of the MIAA’s Pete Schmidt Memorial Award, he scored 88 points on seven field goals, 67 extra points and kicked off 86 times for a 57.1 yard average. A number of SigEps also made good contributions to the Trine football team on defense. Linebacker Jake Vance, ’11, was an NIC All-Fraternity All-American first teamer and second on the team with 70 tackles. He played in the Bowl of Stars Game in Mexico following the D-III playoffs. Lineman Nathan Denton, ’11, posted a team high nine sacks among 30 tackles and was named to the All-MIAA first team. Lineman Chris Eichman, ’11, who had 36 tackles, received All-MIAA second team selection. Defensive back Chad Coulson, ’12, also saw action for Trine.

TRUMAN STATE
Offensive lineman Aaron Tjarks, ’12, started 10 contests for the football squad while five Brothers saw action for the 12-3-2 soccer team. Dan Meagher, ’11, started 16 games and was third in scoring with 19 points, including eight goals. Charlie Backus, ’12, had 15 starts and scored eight points. Also seeing action were Ben Hasse, ’12 (17 starts), Scott Biggerstaff, ’11 (15 starts) and Mike Kane, ’12 (four games).

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS
Seeing action for the 7-3 football squad was wide receiver Michael Weiss, ’12, who caught six passes and returned six kickoffs for a 19.2 average. Soccer midfielder David Klein, ‘11, played in 17 contests for the 14-1-5 squad that played in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

WESTERN MICHIGAN
Head football coach Bill Cubit, Delaware, ’75, led his WMU squad to a 6-6 record in his sixth season with the team.

WESTMINSTER
Football offensive lineman Shawn Zentko, ’11, started two games at guard then shifted to center for his last seven starts.


WORCESTER TECH
Thirteen SigEps were members of the football team in 2010. Tri-captain/linebacker Michael Oliveri, ’11, had seven starts and was in on 35 tackles. Also posting 35 stops was lineman Hal Reader, ’11. Starting 10 contests and posting 30 tackles was defensive back Graham Leto, ’11, who won Liberty League All-Academic honors, as did linebacker Dan Sullivan, ’12. Also seeing action on defense were lineman Anthony Corbo, ’11, back Joe Rubino, ’14, linebacker Ed Lukowski, ’14 and lineman Joe Giesecke, ’14. Lineman Nate Gee, ’13, was on the Liberty All-Academic team and Tim Grupp, ’14, had eight starts on the line. Other players seeing offensive action were quarterback Jared Harbold, ’14, plus wide receivers Ehab Hamdan, ’14 and Trevor Rancourt, ’14.
