UTAH STATE OBTAINS CHARTER

Utah State’s executive Board with their charterSaturday, October 23, 2010 is the day the Utah State chapter regained is designation as Utah Alpha. The chapter’s re-chartering banquet was held during Homecoming Week, in the Riverwoods Conference Center in Logan, Utah. Alumni and undergraduate members participated in the Homecoming parade, tours of the new chapter house, tailgating and a football game, ending the evening with the banquet.

Over 100 attendees included 40 undergraduates and their dates, and about 60 alumni and guests. National Director Shawn McKenna, Maine ’77, acted as the installing officer. District Governor Bill Tucker, Colorado ’85, Chapter Services Director Michael Repasky, Ohio State ’08, and Regional Director Trent Patterson, Wichita State ’10, also attended.

Utah State Quick FactsVice President of Programming Derek Kent, ‘11, called the chartering banquet and presentations, “An unforgettable experience.”

Current Vice President of Finance, Brent Crosby, ’11, exclaimed, “I was blown away when we were presented with not only our new charter, but the original Utah Alpha charter from 1936!” Esteemed alumnus Morty Jenkins, ‘70, surprised the chapter by restoring the treasured document that had been harbored by various alumni during SigEp’s absence at Utah State.

SigEp was a major presence on Utah State’s campus from 1936 until the 1990s, and was re-colonized in 2002. It has thrived since, known for being a leadership force on campus. Members have held positions on the University’s executive council, and brothers currently hold three of those nine positions. SigEps are also a presence in Utah State’s recruiting and new student orientation teams, honor societies, and scholar programs, as well as leadership positions in many of the campus’ clubs and organizations. The current chapter count includes 40 undergraduate members, in addition to 12 brothers stationed around the world for two-year service missions. Last year’s cumulative GPA for the chapter was a 3.15, highest of the Greek organizations at Utah State, and above the university all-men’s average.

More Utah State brothersUtah State is embracing the goal to be the premier collegiate organization and a valued partner in higher education at USU. Programs such as the annual Balanced Man Triathlon and SigEp Success Series show that dedication to the balanced man ideal. Leadership and success-oriented undergraduates and alumni also make SigEp at Utah State the perfect environment for a college man to thrive. Chapter President Erik Mikkelsen, ’12, says, “I definitely see a Buchannan Cup and an RLC [Residential Learning Community accreditation] on the horizon. With our solid new recruits, we’re looking forward to a great year, and these are not the loftiest of our goals.”
