GARY ZACK, MORAVIAN '12, WINS THE NCAA DIVISION-III TOURNAMENT

 Gary Zack, Moravian ‘12, won the NCAA Division-III national title in the javelin last spring, an accomplishment that has truly made him a balanced man. He also earned All-American honors at the meet in May.
Zack won the javelin title with his first toss of the meet, a school record throw and new personal best of 67.36 meters (221 feet). His throw beat the next closest competitor by 2 feet, 1 inch.
"I was friends with two kids I threw with before the meet,” he joked, “but right after my first throw, everyone wanted to be my friend." Zack is now competing in the 2012 outdoor season. He is focused on breaking his own personal bests and defending his NCAA title as a senior in 2012.
Zack started to throw his best with titles at the Landmark Conference meet and Eastern College Athletic Conference meet, where he set a new meet record. He said he knew he was going to break his personal best mark and be right there for the national title in the days leading up to the NCAA meet.
 "I felt prepared going into nationals," Zack said. "My coach Bob Luciano and I, we trained to peak at NCAAs. I wasn't on a roll but I just kept getting better and better going into the meet."
Zack has since worked out beside a couple throwers who are training for the Olympic Trials. He hopes to compete in the Olympic Trials before the 2016 Rio de Janiero Games and he's looking to compete in some USA Track and Field events too.
"It's definitely an accomplishment but I look at it as a stepping stone more than anything," said Zack, who also serves as Pennslvania Beta Alpha’s chaplain. "I just want to keep training and set my goals even higher next year.”
Once Zack graduates, he plans to attain a master's degree in anesthesiology. For two summers, he worked as a nurse extern in the trauma unit at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
