WINTER/SPRING SPORTS REVIEW

Here is our yearly review of stellar accomplishments by SigEp undergraduate scholar athletes in winter sports (basketball, swimming, wrestling) and spring sports (baseball, track & field, tennis, golf, lacrosse, rowing). We encourage all chapters and alumni to send names of athletes to communications@sigep.net for future coverage in both the magazine and on the website.

Addison Demer, Minnesota '11BABSON
Alpine Skier Richard Beneduci ’13, competed at the USCSA National Grand Slalom championship meet. Swimmer Greg DeWitt ’13, placed 17th in the 200 backstroke at the NEWMAC meet and Matt Turkot ’11, was also on the squad. Competing at the New England Division III outdoor track meet were 400 relay team member Rob Chapruet ’12, and distance runner Brian deLeon ’14.

BAKER
Four SigEps helped lead the Wildcats to the Heart of America Athletic Conference outdoor track & field title. Tanner Gleason ’11, placed second in the decathlon and was eighth in the javelin (159’6”). Travis Miller ‘13, was second in the high jump (6’7”) and fourth in the long jump (22’8”). Distance runner Corey Clark ’13, finished fifth in the 10,000 and 14th in the 5000. Christian Lehnherr ’13, was ninth in the hammer throw. Tennis player Casey Gleue ’12, was on the #1 doubles team while captain Adam Taylor ’11, Mason Dick ’13, and Eric Reimer ’12, were on the golf squad.

BUCKNELL
Over 22 fall/spring golf rounds, Will Bachman ’12, was the number three scorer with a 76.23 average. He tied for fourth (including a season-best 66) at the Colgate Invitational; tied for ninth at the Wilmington Invitational; and tied for 17th at the Patriot League meet. Teammate Parker Phillips ’11, played three spring rounds, with a best of 74. Swimming team captain Michael Volpe ’11, finished 11th in the 200 butterfly at the Patriot League meet.

CARNEGIE MELLON
Pole Vaulter Heath McAlister ’12, had a best jump of 12’6” and placed ninth at the University Athletic Association indoor championship.

CASE WESTERN RESERVE
Distance Runner David Dixon ’14, was a member of the track and field squad.

CLARKSON
Swimmer Mike Rowe ’12, was Liberty League champion in the 200 backstroke (1:57.73), fifth in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 500 freestyle. He was on the fourth place 200 freestyle relay and fifth place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

COLUMBIA
The rowing program featured Blake Pinell ’13, on the EARC winning lightweight boat; Nick Sinchak ’13, on the heavyweight squad; and Bruno Salemme ’12, on the lightweight varsity eight.

CREIGHTON
Jimmy Zuegner ’11, saw action for the golf team and had a best round of 77.

DELAWARE
Weightman Ryan Beach ’12, had the second-best discus throw on the squad (153’5”) and also threw the hammer 146’10”. He won the discus event at the West Chester Open and placed fourth at the Colonial Athletic Conference meet.

DENISON
Golfer Aaron Klimchuk ’14, had a career best 72 to earn All-North Coast Athletic Conference second team honors and was second with a 79.0 average over 20 rounds. Runner Chris Black ’12, was on the NCAC seventh place 1600 meter relay team. Seeing baseball action were outfielder Danny Kraus ’13, who batted .377 (20 of 53), pitcher Freddy Marino ’11 (2-1), outfielder Kevin Teague ’11, outfielder-pitcher David Holmes ’12, pitcher Hunter Sorensen ’12, and second baseman Andrew Touhy ’13.

EASTERN ILLINOIS
Earning All-Summit League swimming honors and Academic All-League selections were Ken Tiltges ’13, Michael Lehman ’13, and Colin McGill ’13. At the Summit meet, Tiltges was on second place 400 medley and 800 freestyle relay teams; third place 200 freestyle relay team; placed fourth in the 100 freestyle and breaststroke events; and was fifth in the 200 IM. McGill was on the third place 200 freestyle relay team; fourth place 200 medley relay team; placed fifth in the 50 freestyle; and was eighth in both the 100 freestyle and backstroke events. Lehman swam on the third place 200 freestyle relay team.

EMORY
Distance Runner Scott Jarvis ’13, had a best indoor 3000 meter time of 9:19.89 and also competed in the 5000.

Gary Zack, Moravian '12JOHN CARROLL
Competing at the Ohio Athletic Conference swimming meet were Max Wilberding ’11, (sixth in the 100 backstroke, 13th in the 200 backstroke) and James McElroy ’13. Vince Kopen ’13, had a best of 13’0” in the indoor pole vault and Phil Evankovich ’13, reached 144’4” in the javelin throw.

JOHNS HOPKINS
Co-captain Max Wieder ’11, won eight sabre matches at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South regional fencing meet to become the school’s all-time wins leader with 320 victories. His 2011 record was 63-47 and he competed in the U.S. Collegiate Fencing Squad championship, along with teammate Nicolas Barbera ’13. Teammate Mike Fellows ’11, had a 23-22 sabre record for the season and Kenny Felsenstein ’12, was also on the fencing squad.

LAMBUTH
Golfer Aaron Ingalls ’11, was medalist at the BSC Spring Invitational. Teammate Scott Metcalf ’12, tied for fifth at the Murray State Invitational and placed ninth at the Derrall Foreman Classic. Also seeing golf action for Lambuth was Heath Lay ’12.

LAWRENCE
Swimmer Peter Brengel ’12, won the 100 backstroke and placed second in the 200 backstroke during the Private College Championships. He was also second in the 200 backstroke and on the third place 400 freestyle relay at the Midwest Conference meet. Zach Joseph ’12, competed in the MWC golf meet.

MAINE
Competing at the American East Conference outdoor track meet were two SigEps. David Currier ’12, placed fourth at 10,000 meters and was 12th in the 5000. Teammate Spencer McElwain ’12, was ninth in the 10,000 run.

MARYLAND
Andrew Kay ’11, competed for the Terrapins’ golf team in two tournaments.

MIT
Benjamin Mattocks ’12, placed eighth in the NEWMAC outdoor 5000 meter run. Richard LaGrandier ’11, placed ninth in epee at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing meet. Regulars on the MIT squash team were Austin Anderson ’12, and Michael Zomnir ’12.

MINNESOTA
Addison Demer ’11, was the track squad’s top long jumper, reaching 24’ 3 ¾” at the Drake Relays. He placed ninth at the Big Ten meet, competed at the NCAA West regional and placed sixth in the triple jump (50’ 1 ¾”) at the Big Ten event.

MONMOUTH
Tennis standout Ben Morrow ’11, posted records of 20-7 in singles and 19-9 in doubles action. High jumper Matt Hassler ’12, was sixth in the high jump at both the Midwest Conference meet and Monmouth Invitational. Paul Davies ’13, was also on the track team.

MORAVIAN
Gary Zack ’12, won the NCAA Division III javelin title with a school record throw of 221’ and received All-American honors. He was on the Landmark Conference All-Academic team and placed fourth in the 35 pound weight throw at the conference meet. Tyler Potterton ’13, threw the javelin 187’9” to finish 14th at the Division III meet. Nicco Dalpiaz ’12, won the pole vault (15’5”) at the Landmark outdoor meet and was on the 400 meter outdoor relay team. He was also named to the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Division III men’s All-Academic team. Also doing well at both Landmark Conference track meets were Timothy Lorah ’14 (third in the indoor shot, sixth in the outdoor shot); Michael Facchiano ’12 (fifth in the outdoor hammer throw); and Graham Matthews ’13 (fifth with the outdoor 4000 meter distance relay).

NEBRASKA
Distance Runner Matt Schilling ’11, had the track squad’s fourth-best indoor 800 meter time. He also competed in the indoor 400 and 1000 meter races.

NEBRASKA-KEARNEY
Garrett Goldsberry ’12, ranked third on the golf team with a 77.40 average over 25 rounds. Wrestler Josh Smith ’13, competed at 136 pounds and advanced to the quarter finals at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet.

NORTHWESTERN
Chris Jackman ’13, was a regular on the tennis team, posting marks of 15-8 in doubles and 11-11 in singles play.

OHIO NORTHERN
Jarrod Stevens ’12, had a best leap of 20’ 2 ½” in the long jump and placed 13th in the triple jump (41’6”) at the Ohio Athletic Conference outdoor meet.

James DiBiasio, Ohio Wesleyan '12OHIO WESLEYAN
Two SigEp regulars helped lead the baseball team to a 23-15 record. Second baseman James DiBiasio ’12, batted .287 (39 of 136) with 29 runs scored and a team high 17 stolen bases. During the summer, he was chosen for the Prospect League All-Star Game for collegiate players using wooden bats in a seven state region. Catcher James Toland ’13, hit .299 (32 of 107) with five home runs and 32 runs batted in. Goalie Frank Weschler ’11, saw action for the 10-4 lacrosse team and Zach Weaver ’11, was a tennis team regular.

RANDOLPH-MACON
Seeing action for the tennis squad were Kevin Lloyd ’11, and Joey Farino ’14.

RICHMOND
Brad Miller ’12, was one of the golf team’s top players with a 71.50 average. He tied for fourth at the North Carolina Spring Open and had two 66s in a sixth place finish at the Marshall Invitational. During July, he holed an 85 yard shot for an eagle to win a three man playoff and clinch a spot in the U.S. Amateur national tournament.

ST. MARY’S
Golfer Sam Jernigan ’12, averaged 76.0 over 33 rounds and gained All-Heartland conference honors with a 13th place finish at the conference meet. He was also honored as an All-American Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Teammate Shawn Bennett ’14, averaged 81.29 over 17 rounds.

STANFORD
Michael Hammersley ’11, saw epee action for the fencing team and was joined on the squad by Alexander Stadnyk ’14. Seeing action for the 19-9 volleyball squad was Max Halvorson ’11.

STEVENS TECH
Four SigEps were standouts for the baseball squad, with outfielder Matt Glassman ’11, being named to the All-Empire 8 second team and the New Jersey Collegiate All-State third team. He was the top hitter with a .346 average (36 of 104) and 21 RBI. Also named to the All-Empire 8 second team was pitcher Dan Anunziatta ’11, who had a 3-2 record and 3.18 earned run average. First baseman Ken Meerendonk ’11, led with five homers, batted .290 (36 of 124) and had a five hit game versus Baruch. Infielder Mike Pagliaro ’11, was a .320 hitter (16 of 50). Fencer Dmitri Lamianski ’12, was the lone Division III finalist at the 2011 NCAA regional meet and placed 12th in sabre competition after reaching the third rung of finalists.

Michael Pawalowski ’11, had a personal best triple jump (43’7”) in a second place finish at the Empire 8 meet. Four SigEps were key players for the 18-12 volleyball squad. Captain Brandt Grobeis ’11, won all-conference honors and was nationally ranked in assists, posting 1,201 for the season, including a 50 assist game versus Juniata. He become the second player in school history to record over 4,000 career assists and was AVCA National Player of the Week of January 31. Aaron Ostrovsky ’11, led with 172 assists. Timothy Karl ’11, contributed 148 kills, 92 blocks and 44 digs while Bryant DeFranco ’11, added 82 digs and 27 kills. Wrestler Brad Warren ’12, saw action at 125 pounds.

TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO
Basketball guard Devin Gibson ’11, who led his team to a 20-14 record and NCAA Division I playoff berth, was named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year (3.20 GPA) for the second straight year. He also was named to the NIC All-Fraternity All-American first team and the All-SLC first team. Gibson led the SLC with 183 assists (5.4 per game) and steals (91, 2.7 per game) while ranking fourth in scoring with 577 points (17.0 per game). The MVP of the SLC tournament, he became the SLC career steals leader with 323 and is now UTSA’s third-leading career scorer with 1,681 points.

Bobby Hillier, Thiel '13THIEL
Third baseman Bobby Hillier ’13, was named to the North-American Interfraternity Conference All-Fraternity All-American first team after ranking 45th in NCAA Division III with a .423 batting average (58 of 137). He also had 25 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 29 runs batted in.

TRINE
Andy Lauer ’12, was the top scorer for the 10-4 lacrosse team with 52 points (34 goals, 18 assists). Teammate Alex Gregg ’11, faced 248 shots in goal, had a goals against average of 6.19 and posted 85 saves.

TRUMAN STATE
Second baseman Luke Crader ’11, started for the fourth year and batted .276 (34 of 123) in 39 games.

VALPARAISO
Jarrett Mickens ’11, won Academic All-Horizon League honors for the fourth year and was also on the Academic All-District 5 first team (3.672 GPA). He was Horizon male field Athlete of the Week twice during the spring and set a school long jump record of 24’6 ½”, earning him a trip to the NCAA East regional meet. He had an indoor best triple jump of 48’10” and ranked third at the Horizon outdoor meet triple jump. Teammate Sean Carey ’14, placed eighth in the pole vault (13’5 ¼”) at the Horizon outdoor meet and was also on the outdoor 1600 meter relay. Carmelo Castillo ’14, had the second-best indoor 600 meter time (1:30.89) while also competing at 800 meters and with the 1600 meter relay.

WESTMINSTER
Golfer David Mlinarich ’12, was second on the squad with an 81.2 average and tied for 21st at the PAC meet. His 72 round at Grove City was the team’s lowest score of the season.

WORCESTER TECH
Anthony Corbo ’11, wrestled at 285 pounds and competed at the New England Wrestling Association championship meet.
