SigEp is 300,000 Brothers Strong
Sigma Phi Epsilon is proud to introduce our 300,000th brother - Kevin McGuire, Illinois '16. 100,000 in 1976; 200,000 in 1994; 300,000 in 2012. The growth of our brotherhood confirms that SigEp is a necessary and valuable part of the collegiate experience. It confirms that the SigEp experience and our efforts as volunteers can have a significant impact on today's undergraduate brothers. Facebook and Twitter lit up when we announced on November 1, Founders Day, that we had reached this impressive milestone.
From Orland Park, Ill., Kevin attended Carl Sandburg High School. He was actively involved in Model United Nations as well as in Mu Alpha Theta, a club where he began to embody the qualities of a great SigEp before even getting to college. "We tutored underclassmen in math during their lunch hours and before or after school," he said. "We also had the chance to participate in many philanthropy events with this club."
He displayed Sound Mind as a Prairie State Achievement Examination scholar in mathematics, science and reading, and Sound Body as a member of the lacrosse team. Kevin's initiation represents an important step of SigEp's history as we enhance our programs and refine our plans for growth over the next 10 years.
"Coming to college, I rushed around at other fraternities, but I had my mind set on SigEp," he said. He knew SigEp's values aligned with his and that as a brother he could continue to grow as a person. Kevin is a general business major while he decides the exact area of study he wants to pursue within the business school at Illinois.
As a new member of SigEp, Kevin already sees the benefits of brotherhood. Whether it's taking advantage of Illinois Alpha's Residential Learning Community to enhance his academic experience or simply enjoying the company of his brothers. "From SigEp, I hope to gain a memorable college experience," he said. "And so far I'm right on track."
