Today, many college men are graduating without full-time employment. They are vastly unprepared without a fool-proof resume, no professional network, little understanding of business etiquette, and no clue how to navigate life after college. This is not the case for the more than 150 SigEp participants in our newest leadership event, Life After College, who are now better prepared for post-graduate life.
Life After College prepares upperclassman to be successful personally and professionally as they transition from college to the “real world.” This one day event is designed to educate and equip upperclassmen with the tools and techniques needed to stand out among job applicants. The program also shows you how to navigate the major milestones that occur throughout life outside of the office—dating, marriage, children, and balancing it all.
Three successful Life After College events have already been held in cities across the country, in Philadelphia; Columbus, Ohio; and Richmond, Va. Some of SigEp’s most successful and talented alumni have facilitated and taught participants the in’s and out’s of everything from resume development and the art of LinkedIn to the finer points of managing their first mortgage. They also got the opportunity to network with young alumni, participate in mock interviews, have their resumes reviewed on-site, and much more.
Facilitators come from many areas of expertise, like Wendall Rakosky, Baldwin-Wallace '78, corporate director of human resources for the workforce strategy unit of Lockheed Martin, Dr. David Hanson, Tampa '89, vice president of finance and administration for Virginia Commonwealth University, and Dr. Jonathan Wharton, Stevens Tech Renaissance, assistant professor of history, social sciences and political science at Stevens Institute of Technology. The impressive resumes of our faculty help ensure that the advice given to participants is the best.
The feedback from both the participants and facilitators has been overwhelmingly positive and is extremely encouraging as we brainstorm ways to continually expand the reach of this program. Dakota Graves, Northern Kentucky ’13, who attended the event in Columbus said, “Life After College was one of the most rewarding and exhilarating career workshops that I have ever been to. I learned more yesterday than I have at nearly all resume and interviewing workshops I've ever been to before combined.”
Don’t worry—you still have a chance to attend. There are two more Life After College programs planned for this academic year: in Los Angeles on November 11 and Chicago on February 24. Sign up today for these great events! We promise you will walk away more prepared for your future and confident you have what it takes to be successful in your life after college.
