Here is our semi-annual review of stellar accomplishments by SigEp undergraduate athletes in intercollegiate sports during the winter and spring of 2012. Also mentioned are several alumni involved in college sports. Chapters should submit names of athletes to communications@sigep.net for future coverage in The Journal and Sound Bite.
BABSON
Swimmer Aaron Pomeroy ’15, was on the third place 400 freestyle relay and fifth place 400 medley relay at the NEWMAC meet. Sprinter Vickrum Nabar ’15, placed 19th at 400 meters during the NCAA Division III New England meet. At the NEWMAC outdoor meet, he was on the sixth place 400 meter relay. Teammate Brian deLeon ’14, was 12th in the NEWMAC 10,000 meter run.
BAKER
High jumper Travis Miller ’13, was Heart of America Athlete Conference champion and tied for 13th (6’6”) at the NAIA indoor championship. Competing at the 1,500 meter run was Vincent Tadokoro ’15, and teammate Corey Clark ’13, had an eighth place finish at 5,000 meters during the Central Methodist meet. Catcher Miles Sanderson ’14, had 28 starts on the baseball team. Regulars on the golf team were Mason Dick ’13, (low round of 70) and Zach Pickett ’15. Members of the tennis squad were Zach Andrich ’15, and Ryan Gleue ’15.
BALDWIN-WALLACE
Competing in multiple free style and backstroke events were swimmers Alex Habursky ’14, and Ronny Woodburn ’15.
BUCKNELL
At the Patriot League swimming meet, Trevor Reitz ‘14 had a career-best 50 freestyle time (20.87) in a 10th place finish; placed 12th in the 100 butterfly and was 13th in the 100 freestyle. Teammate Danny Wallace ’14 placed 13th in the ECAC 100 freestyle. Golfer Will Bachman ’12, was on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, tied for 29th at the Manor Intercollegiate and averaged 77.7 over 17 spring rounds. Also on the Patriot Academic Honor Roll were tennis players Scott Bernstein ’14, (7-2 in singles) and Aidan Lynch ’14, (8-7 in doubles play).
CARNEGIE MELLON
Competing in track & field events were distance runner Robert Murcek ’14, and pole vaulter Thomas Doyle ’15.
CASE WESTERN RESERVE
Distance runner David Dixon ’14, was 14th in the indoor University Athletic Association 300 meter run and 16th in the outdoor UAA 1,500 meter event.
CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT
Pitcher Matt Verdillo ’13, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III, earned run average (1.67) for the 34-10 baseball squad. Over 27 games, he was 4-0 with two saves and struck out 54 batters in 43 innings. Golfer Jonathan Howard ’14, averaged 76.8 over 25 rounds. He tied for 10th (223) at the Gordin Classic, tied for 18th at the USA South championship and tied for 68th at the NCAA Division III meet. Tennis standout Joey Manilla ’14, was 11-10 in doubles and John McErlean ’14, was on the track team.
CLARKSON
At the UNYSCSA swimming championship, Mike Rowe ’12, was on the 10th place 400 freestyle relay and placed 12th in the 200 backstroke.
COLUMBIA
Rower Roger Stone ’14, competed at the Under 23 National Team competition and was on the lightweight first boat that reached the championship race. He was also in the U23 lightweight quadruple sculls stroke seat. Matt Ridgeway ’15, was on the heavyweight rowing squad while other SigEp lightweight competitors were Bruno Salemme ’12, Steven Boyle ’14, Lane Brokaw ’14, Anders Smedsrud ’14, Fredrik Aasaaren ’15, and Thabet Mahayni ’15. Seeing a lot of action for the squash team was Kyul Rhee ’15.
DENISON
A leading hitter on the baseball team was first baseman Danny Kraus ’13, who batted .317 (40 of 126) with 23 runs scored and 17 runs batted in. Teammates seeing action were pitcher/outfielder Dave Holmes ’12, and pitcher Hunter Sorensen ’12.
DUKE
Colin Colter ’15, was a sabre competitor on the Blue Devils’ fencing squad.
EASTERN ILLINOIS
After transferring to Utah, swimmer Ken Tiltges ’13, competed in the U.S. Olympic trials. At the Pacific-12 meet, he set a new Utah record time (1:48.59) in the 200 IM and was on three fifth place relays: 200 medley, 400 medley and 400 freestyle. EIU head coach Elliott McGill, Eastern Illinois ’09, coached his younger brother, Colin McGill ’13, who set personal best times in the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the IUPUI meet.
FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL
Pitcher Johnathan Costa ’15, who was drafted out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles, had a 2-2 record with one save in 23 games, along with 38 strikeouts in 30 innings.
HUNTINGDON
Chosen as Most Valuable Player at the Great South Athletic Conference tennis meet was Lee Howell ’15, who won the #2 doubles and #4 singles titles.
ILLINOIS TECH
Catcher/infielder Bill Cronin ’15, hit .265 (22 of 83) and Dane Christianson ’15, competed in one meter diving at the Liberal Arts meet.
JOHN CARROLL
James McElroy ’13, swam backstroke events while javelin thrower Phil Evankovich ’13, distance runner Josh Babb ’15, javelin thrower David Contento ’15, and shot putter Rob Morel ’15, were track team members.
JOHNS HOPKINS
Sabre competitor Nicolas Barbera ’13, had a 46-36 fencing mark in 2012, tied for 10th at the Temple Open and was 27th at the NCAA regional meet. Michael Spadaro ’15, competed in the pole vault, long jump, triple jump and high jump (best of 6’5”).
LAWRENCE
Swimmer Peter Brengel ’12, wrapped up a great career at the Midwest Conference meet, winning the 100 backstroke, placing second in the 200 backstroke and being on two third place relays (200 freestyle, 200 medley). He also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. Teammate Evan Flack ’13, competed in the MWC 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle events.
MAINE
At the IC4A track & field championship 10,000 meter run, David Currier ’12, placed 16th and Spencer McElwain ’12, finished 21st. Both were named to the American East Conference Academic Honor Roll. Also on the AEC honor roll was diver Spencer Warmuth ’14, who placed 12th in the one meet event and 14th in the three meter dive at the AEC swimming championship.
MIT
Following second place 1,500 meter finishes at the NEWMAC and ECAC track meets, Benjamin Mattocks ’12, placed 12th in the NCAA Division III 1,500 run. Teammate Gilbert O’Neil ’15, ran in the New England Division III indoor meet, placing eighth with the 3,200 meter relay and 17th at 1,000 meters. Austin Anderson ’12, was a regular on the MIT squash team.
MONMOUTH
Gage DeCook ’16, averaged 81.4 over seven rounds of golf while chapter mates Matt Hassler ’12, Paul Davies ’14, and Ryan Arndt ’16, were track competitors. Pitcher/first baseman Nick Evans ’14, was on the baseball team.
MORAVIAN
Gary Zack ’12, earned All-American honors for the third time and was NCAA Division III javelin runner-up with a throw of 220’3”, eighth-best in Division III history. He was also named Division III Mideast Region Male Athlete of the Year and on the Academic All-District IV first team. Teammate Niccolo Dalpiaz ’12, placed 12th in the decathlon (career high 6,512 points) at the Division III meet and reached a career-best 15’1” in the pole vault. At the Landmark Conference meet, Dalpiaz won the 110 meter high hurdles; Michael Facchiano ’12, placed fifth in the hammer throw; Phillip Torres ’13, was seventh in the hammer; and Travis Dorsa ’15, ran on the second place 1,600 meter relay; placed seventh at 200 meters; and was eighth in the 100 meter dash. Baseball catcher Harrison Fonteix ’14, batted .344 (22 of 64) with 21 runs and 13 RBI.
MUHLENBERG
Tennis player Jason Teitelbaum ’14, led the team with seven doubles wins and was also a regular in singles play.
NEBRASKA-KEARNEY
Three SigEps were standouts on the golf team and completed at the NCAA Division II regional meet. Kris Koelzer ’13, averaged 75.38 over 26 rounds; tied for fourth place (224) at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet; and tied for 53rd at the Division II regional. Garrett Goldsberry ’12, averaged 76.00 over 25 rounds; placed 13th at the RMAC tournament; and tied for 80th at the Division II regional. Jordan Arensdorf ’13, had a 78.46 average for 26 rounds and played at the Division II event. Distance runner Connor Marshall ’15, was on the track team.
NORTHWESTERN
Golfer Bennett Lavin ’15, had a 75.16 average (low round of 69) for 31 rounds; placed 18th at the NYX Hoosier Invitational; played in the Big Ten meet; and placed 43rd at the NCAA regional meet. Tennis player Chris Jackman ’14, had records of 11-7 in singles and 4-3 in doubles. He played in the Big Ten and NCAA Division I tournaments.
OHIO NORTHERN
Track squad member Jarrod Stevens ’12, had best marks of 18’8” in the long jump and 39’1” in the triple jump.
OHIO WESLEYAN
Catcher James Toland ’13, was named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference first team and the North-American Interfraternity Conference All-Fraternity All-American second team. He batted .310 (40 of 129) with 15 doubles, a team-high four homers and 26 RBI. Second baseman James DiBiasio ’12, hit .292 (26 of 89) and outfielder Colton Poncsak ’14, played in 13 contests.
RANDOLPH-MACON
Tennis player Connor Hoerr ’15, was a regular in both singles and doubles play.
RICHMOND
All-Atlantic 10 Conference golfer Brad Miller ’12, was chosen for the Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar Team and led the team with a 73.07 average. He was sixth at the Wofford Invitational (211, including two 69s); 12th (210) at the Marshall Invitational; 15th (217) at the ODU/OBX Collegiate; 16th (218) at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate; and 19th (146) at the Atlantic 10 meet.
ROCHESTER
Four SigEp swimmers competed at the University Athletic Association meet:
Monte Jiran ’13, (17th in the 1650); Oliver Geiger ’14, (18th in the 1650); Pat Davis ’15, (18th in the 200 breaststroke); and Russell Rosenkranz '15, (21st in the 200 backstroke). Seeing action for the tennis team was David Wolf ’15.
ST. MARY’S
Golfer Sam Jernigan ’12, was named an All-American Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America after averaging 75.22 over 10 tournaments. He placed second at the Texas Chevy Dealers Intercollegiate placed 11th at the Heartland Conference meet. Teammate Shawn Bennett ’14, was 25th at the Heartland tourney.
STANFORD
Competing in the fencing team’s foil competition was Alexander Stadnyk ’14.
STEVENS TECH
First baseman Matt Glassman ’11, was named to the NIC All-Fraternity All-American first team, the All-Empire 8 first team and the Capitol One Academic All-American third team. The team MVP, he led in hitting (.398, 53 of 133), runs (43), doubles (14) and home runs (six). Victor Servito ’13, won the 110 hurdles event and earned All-Empire 8 first team honors. He was also second in the high jump, fourth in the pole vault and on the fifth place 1600 relay. Other track teamers included Joseph Cirasa ’15, Michael Maglio ’15, Ryan Miskanich ’14, and Andrew Verderame ’12.
TCU
Competing for the track team were two SigEps. Preston Newsome ’15, ran distance events at five outdoor meets and placed sixth in the 1500 at the Michael Johnson Classic. Chris Soechting ’15, had a team co-high of 6’4 ¾” in the high jump.
THIEL
Pitcher Bobby Hillier ’13, posted a 3.19 ERA, 3-2 record and 32 strikeouts in 42.1 innings. Following the season, he saw action for the Normal CornBelters of the independent Frontier League. Golfer Matt Fiore ’14, placed 12th at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference meet.
TRINE
Lacrosse player Andy Lauer ’12, was fourth with 30 points on 17 goals and 13 assists. Goalie Alex Gregg ’12, had a goals against average of 8.26 per game, made 166 saves and picked up 44 ground balls.
VALPARAISO
Contributing on the track team were five SigEps. Eric Loria ’15, had the top indoor 800 time (1:58.64) and second-best 1500 time (4:05.66). Sean Carey ‘14, posted the top pole vault height (12’11 ¾”) while James Delcambre ’14, had the second-best indoor 300 time. Also competing were Chad Henkel ’14 and Kiefer Heiman ’14.
WASHINGTON IN ST. LOUIS
Seeing action for the baseball team were second baseman Noah Doppelt ’15, who started 22 contests, infielder Doug Gleicher ’15, and pitcher Keith Wood ’15. Key tennis players were Max Franklin ’14, (18-13 in singles) and Naveen Chadalavada '15 (6-3 in singles).
WESTMINSTER
Piitcher Ron Sullivan ’15, had a 4-1 record in eight games for the 28-17 baseball team. Shot putter Jason Frawley ’14, won the Wooster Invitational with a throw of 43’7 ¼”. He also placed fourth at the Carnegie Mellon meet and fifth at the Kenyon College Classic. Another shot putter, Josh Bradley ’12, placed third at the Jim Wuske Invitational.
WORCESTER TECH
Lee Keaffer ’14, continues to gain recognition in power lifting at collegiate national competitions since setting national deadlift record (545 pounds) for his age and weight in 2011. Competing for WPI’s track squad were Will Lynch ’15, and Nate Martel ’15.
