New Chapter Development

SigEp's expansion team is viewed as one of the best in the fraternity world for opening new chapters with strong, dominant manpower, and a culture focused upon being Balanced Men of Sound Mind and Sound Body. The team's recent successes include:

  • Arizona State University-54 men, 3.2 grade point average. Members include a varsity golfer, Marine reservists, Army ROTC, a mariachi musician, and several published authors and web designers.
  • University of Delaware-52 men, 3.15 grade point average. Members include athletes in varsity football, crew, track, and soccer, a staff reporter for the school newspaper, and members of numerous honorary societies.
  • Stevens Institute of Technology-47 men with a 3.4 grade point average. Members include varsity scholar athletes in baseball, volleyball, wrestling, track, and fencing, and members of student government, orientation leaders, and seven members of the university Honors program.
  • Yale University-64 men with a 3.57 grade point average. Members include 15 varsity athletes, leaders of student political groups, thespians, and other noted campus leaders.

The expansion team will spend a minimum of four weeks on campus recruiting. Prior to arriving on campus, the team will:

  • Identify key local volunteers who can actively mentor the undergraduate chapter. A local advisory board will be formed to serve as a resource to the chapter. This board will be educated in the Residential Learning Community, Balanced Man Program, SigEp's Alcohol Initiative, chapter finances, Ritual education, and successful mentoring of learning groups.
  • Develop student awareness prior to undergraduate recruitment. The fraternity and local volunteers will develop a marketing plan to introduce the new SigEp chapter.
  • Utilize scholarship programs to identify key student leaders. Programs like the Balanced Man Scholarship allow SigEp to identify top prospects and introduce them to the fraternity.
  • Utilize print and electronic media to inform the campus community of recruiting effort.

Once the preliminary work is complete, the expansion team will:

  • Assign a minimum of two professional recruiters to be on campus to lead the expansion. They will recruit new undergraduate members through informational meetings, attending campus organizational meetings, and scheduling one-on-one interviews.
  • Educate new members on proper risk management policies, the Balanced Man Program, and becoming part of the larger SigEp community.
  • Arrange for new members to experience the Sigma Rite of Passage (joining ceremony) and begin their journey through the Balanced Man Program. Local alumni are encouraged to participate.

After the initial expansion:

  • The chapter can expect monthly visits from the Regional Director.
  • A calendar will be planned for the remainder of the term. A community service project, educational programming, and a volunteer board meeting will occur within the first week.
  • The chapter and volunteers will participate in a retreat focusing on the implementation of the Balanced Man Program.
  • The chapter's volunteers will meet monthly with the chapter's executive committee. At each meeting, the chartering criteria should be reviewed for progress. Each member of the volunteer board will mentor an undergraduate officer.

Upon completion of the expansion, the majority of service will be provided by the Regional Director and the District Governor. The Headquarters staff will be available to aid as needed.
