A chapter retreat is an opportunity for brothers to spend a period of time away from campus or the normal chapter facilities to accomplish an objective.
Possible focuses during a chapter retreat could include:
• Chapter goal setting
• Brotherhood bonding and team building
• Recruitment planning and goal setting
• Member development planning and goal setting
• Upperclassmen career development
Many things can be done in a retreat setting that cannot be done in a regular meeting. Time spent having fun and accomplishing common goals, away from distractions and in the company of brothers, can be a key to chapter success, and can also make for a great memory. Retreats are a great way to develop buy-in on the chapter vision, while keeping upperclassmen involved and preventing senior apathy.
Consider having a retreat in March, just after an executive board returns from CLA, or at the start of a school year or semester. The momentum of the retreat will help focus the chapter for a great semester.
A good chapter retreat location should be booked at least two months in advance. The retreat should happen outside of the chapter facility and preferably off campus. Good locations include:
• Local lodges
• Community centers
• Boy Scout or church camps
There are multiple people who can help plan, facilitate or execute a successful retreat, including:
• Alumni and Volunteer Corporation members
• Chapter counselors
• Regional directors
• Faculty fellows
• Greek advisors
• District governors
