So often, fraternities are in the newspaper when something bad happens. Let’s change that, because we all know that our chapters spend the vast majority of their time making great things happen. Not only is it fun to see your own name in the paper, but increased positive exposure can help the chapter attract potential new members, impress parents of potential new members, impress your future employers, and maybe even garner more donations from alumni.
During Carlson Leadership Academies in February, vice presidents of communication get guidance on media relations, and a key tool to take the next step: a media contact list customized for their chapter’s location.
Chapters can use this list as a starting point to promote the chapter. All you need is a story or an idea for a story. Consider our list of what makes a good story, do some brainstorming at your next chapter meeting and set a goal to get in your local paper at least once a semester.
Use the tools below for big wins that you can promote for your chapter. And you can look at these resources to build a press release about your unique, newsworthy happenings.

Remember, SigEp’s reputation is built one chapter at a time. Investing a bit of effort in cultivating positive coverage can impact the public’s perception of your chapter, the national Fraternity and even the entire Greek community.
