The best sports teams, companies and organizations in the world make recruiting a year-round priority. They know that acquiring talented people is what drives any group forward, so they take no breaks from that pursuit. Our chapters should be no different. By focusing on recruiting members at all times of the year, we create a culture of strong recruitment. When recruiting becomes a part of everyday chapter life, it’s actually easier. Member development events, community service trips, chapter meetings and meals can all double as recruitment events, without the cost of adding new events to the chapter calendar.
A chapter that determines its optimal size has an easier time setting manpower, recruitment, and other operating goals on a year-to-year basis. SigEp’s best chapters have established a goal for their chapter’s optimal size that provides consistency from executive board to executive board, allows for long-term recruitment planning, and helps alumni-volunteers and Headquarters staff support the goals and direction of the chapter.
Setting an optimal size is part of a long-term effort for a chapter to reach a level of manpower that is sustainable and provides the best possible experience to brothers. There is not a pre-determined size for every chapter. Instead, the campus dynamics and trends, as well as the chapter’s history and future needs must serve as the foundation for determining optimal size.
While chapters must set goals around quantity, the chapter also needs to make sure it is recruiting the right type of men. Setting and adhering to recruitment standards ensures that the men we ask to join the Fraternity espouse SigEp’s values and will make a positive impact. Seek out new members who are good students, involved on campus, have diverse backgrounds and interests, and are committed to staying involved in SigEp.
The Renaissance of Brotherhood Program provides for men who live up to the ideals of Sigma Phi Epsilon to be part of the Fraternity even though they may not have had the opportunity during their college years. Any chapter can participate in the Renaissance of Brotherhood Program any time during the academic year. As much care should be used in selecting a renaissance brother as is used to select an undergraduate member. |More
