Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity

Negative impact of hazing

Hazing creates liability risk for the chapter and the entire Fraternity, and it hinders the development of friendships that are based on brotherhood.

Hazing is illegal and considered a criminal act in 44 states. This may mean that a finding of guilt in a criminal case may serve as an assumption of responsibility in a civil case.

Hazing is specifically excluded on SigEp’s liability insurance policy, and the policy WILL NOT pay for the cost of an attorney to defend you or a judgment if one is entered against you.

Here are some of the risks if you are found responsible for hazing:

  • A civil lawsuit
  • Criminal prosecution for an illegal act
  • Discipline by the national Fraternity
  • Discipline by the university
  • Loss of insurance coverage
