The elected officers of an undergraduate chapter are entrusted with the leadership and management of the chapter and the preservation of the charter during their term in office.
Undergraduate chapter officers should be able to:
• Lead a safe, healthy and relevant experience that adds value for all members.
• Understand the skills needed to work on a team.
• Lead by example and serve as a role model to all chapter brothers.
• Develop and articulate a shared vision for the chapter.
• Set and meet SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely).
• Address conflict and risk appropriately and proactively.
• Communicate with a variety of audiences including alumni, parents and university officials.
Understanding your fellow officers is another vital aspect of being a chapter officer. It is important to understand how the executive board works together so that you can effectively meet your goals. Check out the working as an executive board section to learn how to better work as a team.
Chapter officers should expect support from their Alumni and Volunteer Corporation. They will also regularly work directly with staff from both the university and the Fraternity’s headquarters. Each of these groups serve as great resources to help provide the best chapter experience possible.
To be eligible to hold an elected position in a Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter, a member must be in good standing and must maintain a cumulative grade point average that is at least a 2.8 or 0.2 points higher than the chapter’s minimum grade point average for potential new members, whichever is greater.
The Fraternity’s Grand Chapter Bylaws call for the election of a chapter president, five vice presidents in the areas of programming, finance, recruitment, member development and communications, as well as the five members of the Standards Board: the chaplain, senior marshal, junior marshal, guide and guard.
Most chapters appoint several other positions such as a Balanced Man Scholarship chairman and/or a Residential Learning Community chairman. Balanced Man Program chapters will also appoint challenge coordinators to implement member development programming.
