Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity

Vice president of communications

The vice president of communications is the chapter’s chief information officer.  It is an exciting role that grows and expands as technology advances.  The vice president of communications works to maintain strong lines of communication among various audiences—both internal and external.  He must be proactive in distributing information to undergraduates, their parents, news outlets, SigEp Headquarters and the local campus and community.  He is the brother most capable of drawing positive attention to the chapter.  The media often portrays the negatives and stereotypes of Fraternity life, but the vice president of communications has the ability to promote all of the beneficial and worthwhile things a chapter is doing.

The top priorities of a vice president of communications are to:

  • Maintain lines of communication among undergraduates, alumni, university, Headquarters and other audiences.
  • Generate local press for chapter achievements and events.
  • Drive the chapter’s social media presence.
  • Serve as a steward for the local chapter’s and national Fraternity’s brand.
  • Align chapter communications with the Fraternity’s values and ideals.
  • Take minutes at chapter and executive board meetings, and distribute them to the chapter and AVC.
  • Keep and organize the chapter’s historical records and membership roster.
  • Contribute undergraduate focused articles to the alumni newsletter.
  • Manage the other undergraduates on the communications cabinet.
  • Set and work to achieve SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely).

A great vice president of communications has strong communications and writing skills.  In today’s day and age, vice presidents of communications should be able to leverage tools like social media, blogging and a chapter website.  They should also look for opportunities to pitch stories to local news outlets, so that we can showcase the many great things our Fraternity does.  Ideal brothers for this position have an interest in news and media coverage.
