Resident Scholar

Role

Resident scholars are graduate students who serve as a resident advisor with a chapter.

Responsibilities

Resident scholars provide leadership training, academic guidance, and counseling to the chapters they serve. They live in the chapter house (when applicable) and work with the alumni and volunteer corporation, chapter counselor, and Headquarters staff. Like a resident advisor in a resident hall on campus, resident scholars are expected to serve as role models for chapter members.

Selection & Management

Once a qualified resident scholar candidate has been identified, a Headquarters staff member and the alumni and volunteer corporation work together to place the graduate student with the chapter. Graduate students must complete an application through SigEp Headquarters before being appointed. Except on rare occasions, a graduate student will not be appointed to the resident scholar position if he is attending the same college or university as he did for his undergraduate education.

After a resident scholar is appointed, a contract is developed in collaboration with the resident scholar, alumni and volunteer corporation, and regional director to outline the specific expectations. Three areas are identified on which the resident scholar will focus for the year, and an action plan is created. These focus areas often include recruitment, academics, membership development, and other leadership development activities.

Remuneration

Resident scholars typically receive free room and board from the alumni and volunteer corporation (when applicable). In addition, resident scholars receive a graduate studies scholarship from the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation in return for their work with a chapter.

Results

The alumni and volunteer corporation and the regional director evaluate the performance of the resident scholar at the conclusion of each term. Effective resident scholars may be re-appointed, and ineffective resident scholars may be removed.

The resident scholar program has proven to be a successful way of helping a chapter improve or maintain good performance. Call Headquarters to learn more about the program.
